General Schengen short-stay preparation

Use this summary to prepare questions and organise your file. Your application route and the authority’s current checklist determine the complete requirements.

  • Passport valid for at least three months after your intended departure from the Schengen area.
  • Completed application and a photograph meeting the required standard.
  • Travel medical insurance covering emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation.
  • Evidence of travel purpose, accommodation, financial means and intention to return.
  • Biometrics where required, plus the destination mission’s additional documents.

Apply through the country of your main destination; where stays are equal, the first-entry country generally determines the consulate. Each mission has its own checklist: this general list is not a replacement for it.
